Curatorial notes

Leo Gestel made this drawing, Vuist die een stok omklemt, with graphite on paper. Isn't it interesting how a few simple lines can convey so much tension? Gestel's marks here are tentative, searching, almost as if he's feeling his way around the subject. The drawing has a real sense of process, of the artist figuring things out as he goes. You can almost see his hand moving across the paper. The thing that strikes me is the contrast between the tight grip of the fist and the delicate, almost ethereal quality of the lines. It's like the drawing itself is embodying the tension between control and freedom. Look at how the lines around the knuckles are drawn with more intensity. It reminds me a little of Käthe Kollwitz. But here, Gestel is all about embracing ambiguity, leaving space for our imaginations to fill in the gaps.
