Editor: Right now, we're looking at Elina Brotherus's "3D Glasses," a 2015 photograph. The model, perhaps Brotherus herself, is wearing wonderfully retro 3D glasses and an even more wonderfully patterned top! I find the piece strangely serene and a little humorous. What do you see when you look at it? Curator: Ah, yes, serenity and humour…perfect words for it! For me, this photograph tickles that strange spot where the everyday and the slightly absurd meet. There's a quiet confidence in the gaze, isn't there? It’s as if she’s inviting us into her private, possibly slightly quirky, world. The 3D glasses – a total throwback – become a filter, both literally and metaphorically, on how we perceive her and, perhaps, ourselves. What do you make of the colour choices? Editor: They're quite bold! The contrast between the red top and the turquoise pants creates such an engaging visual tension, like two different dimensions colliding—no pun intended! Do you think the colours inform the themes of the photo? Curator: I think so. The deliberate clash is almost playful, pushing us to question our own expectations. Like, are we supposed to be looking at the fashion, the person, or some deeper emotional landscape? Perhaps it's all three. This reminds me of a time when I wore mismatched socks on purpose... did anyone even notice? It was my little act of rebellion, similar to the boldness in Brotherus’ work. It’s amazing how the most unassuming photograph can crack open all these unexpected pathways. Editor: It really is. I'll definitely look at 3D movies differently now. Curator: Exactly! That's the magic, isn't it? Seeing the world—and ourselves—in new dimensions.
