This elaborate art cabinet was crafted anonymously, its date lost to time. It offers a compelling glimpse into the social and cultural values of its era. Such cabinets were status symbols. They were commissioned by the wealthy to showcase their collections of precious objects and curiosities from around the world, often acquired through colonial trade. Think of the stories these objects hold, the hands they passed through. Consider the exploitation and extraction that fueled the creation of such wealth, of which this cabinet is but one expression. The cabinet thus becomes a repository not just of objects, but of power dynamics. How does the cabinet itself perform identity, and whose stories does it tell, or conceal? Its dark wood and ornate carvings speak to a desire for prestige, but also perhaps a sense of enclosure, of keeping certain narratives carefully locked away. In our contemporary moment, such objects invite us to consider the legacies of colonialism and the ways in which private collections have historically shaped our understanding of the world.

This piece is a veritable princely art collection in miniature. All manner of materials and artefacts have been incorporated into it. Originally the many drawers and compartments contained works of art and natural specimens. They were assembled by the Augsburg merchant, art dealer and diplomat Philipp Hainhofer. The whole constituted a reflection in miniature (microcosm) of the universe (macrocosm). The loose contents were stolen in 1631.
