Curatorial notes

Johannes de Mare created this print called 'Man in harnas voor een paus' – or ‘Man in armour before a Pope’ - sometime in the 19th century. Here we see a Pope in his papal robes, seated in a grand chair, in conversation with a man in armour. Surrounding them are other figures, seemingly frozen in moments of drama. The image invites us to consider the complex relationship between religious authority and military power. It was a fraught dynamic at this time in European history. The print hints at the tension between spiritual leadership and the worldly concerns of power, protection and conflict. To understand this image better, we might delve into historical archives, exploring the political intrigues and power plays of the 19th century. Art, after all, is not created in a vacuum, but in a specific social and institutional context.
