This is a mandocello, made around the turn of the century by the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Manufacturing Company. What I see is a surface alive with subtle colour gradations; it’s as though the wood is breathing. Look closely, and you’ll notice the way the light catches the curves, highlighting the textures and polished grain. This is not just a pretty object, it’s a testament to craft, and a conversation between the materials and the maker. Every detail from the tuning pegs to the tailpiece, is rendered with care. This piece reminds me a little of work by guitar maker, Linda Manzer. Like her, the makers of this instrument have created something of great aesthetic value, and great functionality. In the end, it is the dialogue between these things that make the work so compelling.
