These are two vertically-oriented panels whose creation dates are currently unknown, they feature intricate designs rendered through engraving. Each panel presents a column of putti, or cherubic figures, clinging to a central, decorative element. Notice the emphasis on line and form. The artist uses dense, cross-hatched lines to create volume and shadow, giving the figures a sense of three-dimensionality despite the flatness of the print medium. The composition invites us to explore the interplay between these classical forms and the symbolic meanings they may hold. These putti, traditionally symbols of divine love and innocence, are here engaged in a dynamic, almost athletic struggle. What established meanings or values are destabilized through the medium? By manipulating light and shadow, the engraver crafts a visual experience that challenges fixed meanings. Art, after all, remains a site of ongoing interpretation.
