Editor: This is Julia Feininger's "Carnival," a black ink work. I am immediately struck by the contrast between the figures, one slumped on the stairs, the others flamboyant and theatrical. What symbols jump out at you? Curator: The masks, the costumes, the exaggerated gestures - aren’t they all signifiers of transformation, of stepping outside of one's ordinary self? The staircase, though, is a recurring image; perhaps a symbol of the social ladder and performance of identities? Editor: That’s a fascinating perspective. Thank you for sharing your expertise! Curator: It was wonderful to explore how symbols can be re-imagined and carry new weight across decades.
