Frederik Ludvig Bradt created this print, "Hertug Ferdinands Mindestøtte," memorial to Duke Ferdinand. Dominating the composition is a solemn monument, adorned with classical motifs such as the wreath, symbolizing victory and memory, alongside the helmet, a symbol of military honor. This echoes ancient Roman funerary monuments, where wreaths were bestowed upon heroes, and helmets signified martial prowess. Yet, look closer. This wreath, born from ancient Greece, reappears centuries later, adorning the graves of fallen soldiers in both world wars. Similarly, the helmet, once a symbol of individual glory, becomes a haunting reminder of mass conflict. Such symbols are not static; they are vessels carrying the weight of collective memory. As time passes, the monument retains the emotional weight of loss and remembrance. It transforms from a personal elegy into a universal symbol of mourning.
