Henri Matisse painted The Little Gate of the Old Mill during a period when French society was undergoing rapid industrialization. Matisse captures a moment of serene escape. The image is of the threshold to what? Is it to a garden, a home, or a new stage of life? With nature pressing in on all sides and an arched doorway at the top of a short, steep set of stairs, Matisse destabilizes traditional representations of linear perspective, encouraging us to lose ourselves in the sensory experience of place. The steps act as a visual bridge, creating a feeling of transition. Matisse once said "I don't paint things - only the difference between things". He asks us to find beauty in the everyday world. The painting reflects a collective yearning for simpler times, and draws attention to the emotional significance found in seemingly ordinary spaces.
