Timothy Cole created this engraving, "Madonna of the Donors," as a reproduction; he was part of a generation that grappled with how to democratize art through print media. Cole, working at the turn of the century, was known for his meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. Here he revives the traditional European motif of the Madonna and Child, flanked by kneeling donors who commissioned the work, and places this devotional scene into the homes of everyday Americans. Cole's printmaking practice allowed for the circulation and preservation of cultural heritage. While he aimed to make art accessible, we might consider how class dynamics are subtly at play. The act of commissioning and possessing such art might still reflect a certain level of economic privilege and cultural capital, even through reproduction. Cole's work invites us to reflect on the democratization of art and its intersection with class and cultural values.
