Abraham Meertens made this drawing, ‘Ontwerp voor een kamerversiering met nis en ornamenten’, with pen in grey ink, and brush in grey and brown ink. Meertens was an accomplished ornamentalist, and here he’s showing us his vision for an ideal interior. Note the architectural detailing: fluted pilasters, garlands, and sculptural figures set in niches. All of this would have to be carved, sawn, and joined, a labor-intensive process dependent on a whole workforce of skilled artisans. The drawing itself is a kind of prototype, allowing a patron to visualize the finished result. In that sense, it is a design. But it is also a work of art in its own right. The careful rendering of light and shadow, the balanced composition, all elevate this work. This drawing collapses our usual distinctions between high art and craft. It reminds us that both depend on human skill, and can achieve extraordinary expressive power.
