Vajda Lajos made this pencil drawing, Houses with Still Life, in 1936. The overlapping of geometric forms might at first suggest the influence of the European avant-garde, but it also reflects a deep engagement with specifically Hungarian artistic and social concerns. Made during a period of increasing political instability and the rise of authoritarianism in Hungary, this work seems to challenge the traditional artistic and institutional frameworks of the time. We see familiar subjects - houses, a still life - but they are rendered in a fragmented and disorienting way. Is Vajda suggesting that the old orders no longer hold? The way the buildings merge into each other, almost collapsing, could be seen as a comment on the fragile state of Hungarian society. To fully understand this artwork, we need to consider the complex history of Hungary in the 1930s. Researching the cultural and political debates of the time helps us understand how artists like Vajda were responding to the social structures of their time.
