This half model of a 14-Gun Brig, crafted by an anonymous artist, presents us with more than just naval architecture. The ship, a vessel of exploration and conflict, embodies the human desire to conquer the unknown and navigate the treacherous seas. Notice the sleek, dark hull contrasting with the white underbelly – a visual dichotomy reflecting the ship's dual nature as both a symbol of power and a fragile entity at the mercy of the elements. The ship as a symbol appears in ancient Egyptian funerary boats that guarantee safe passage to the netherworld. Think, also, of the Argo, Jason's ship, laden with heroes questing for the Golden Fleece. Just as those Greek heroes navigated mythical beasts, the ship represents a vessel ferrying man in the face of existential uncertainty. This symbol resurfaces, evolving through history, reflecting our enduring need to confront the unknown. Like the ship that carries us away into a new world, the sea is a subconscious pull towards the mystery of existence.
