Curator: Isidore Opsomer, a Belgian artist born in 1878, painted this still life, "Vase with Dahlias." Editor: It's got a lovely, brooding feel, doesn’t it? All those dusky reds against the cool blues. Curator: Yes, the Tate acquired it, adding to a collection that, even then, showed an interest in modern approaches to traditional subjects. Editor: It almost feels like he's captured the dahlias at that fleeting moment just before they fade, a final burst of color. Curator: The public's appetite for these sorts of domestic scenes increased dramatically during the interwar period. Editor: Well, it certainly speaks to the enduring appeal of finding beauty in the everyday, doesn't it? A vase of dahlias, immortalized.
