This is a photograph taken by J.W. Meyster, we don’t know exactly when, and is a spread from a photo book, showing a rubber plantation in Sumatra. It's a small image, but it speaks volumes about the landscape, the industry, and how they intertwine. I imagine Meyster, out in the fields, trying to capture the immensity and the order of the rubber trees. Look how the light filters through the leaves, creating patterns of light and shadow. It’s about the natural world being reshaped for industry. These documentary photographs remind us of the work of artists like the Bechers, who also sought to catalog the world around them. Through a different lens, these images reveal the artist's presence and hand in constructing how we view it. It is an ongoing conversation about how we see, what we value, and how we represent the world around us.
