Eric Ravilious painted "FIRLE BEACON" in watercolor, and it feels like looking through a rainy window. The muted palette, mostly earth tones, gives the whole scene a soft, melancholic vibe. I love how the brushstrokes are so visible, especially in the clouds, where you can almost feel the dampness in the air. You can see the way he's built up the layers, creating depth and texture with each stroke. It's like he’s revealing his process right there on the surface. Look at the fence in the foreground: each picket is rendered with such care, yet they all blur together, dissolving into the landscape. That little detail is almost a metaphor for how we experience the world, always caught between clarity and ambiguity. Ravilious reminds me a bit of Edward Hopper in his ability to find beauty in the ordinary. Both artists invite us to slow down, look closely, and find poetry in the everyday.
