Leo Gestel made this drawing, Takken, using pencil, and what we’re seeing here is really an interest in artmaking as a process. It's the kind of drawing where you can see the artist working out ideas, trying different things. The material aspect of this piece is so simple, just pencil on paper, but it’s how Gestel uses that simplicity that’s really compelling. The lines are thin and delicate, almost like he’s feeling his way around the subject, and you can see this in the top left corner, where the lines wiggle and dance. They aren’t trying to be perfect or realistic, but more about capturing the essence of these branches. This reminds me of Agnes Martin's work, where the grid is about creating space for contemplation, and it shows us that art is an ongoing conversation, always open to new interpretations.
