Thomas Cole captured this idyllic ‘Sunny Morning on the Hudson River’ in paint. Here, Cole presents nature as sublime and untouched. Yet, this was painted in a period of rapid industrialization and westward expansion across America, a time when the artistic and literary establishment was attempting to define a new, distinctly ‘American’ aesthetic. The image creates meaning through a careful arrangement of visual codes. The sun bathes the landscape in a golden light, visually reinforcing the idea of the Hudson River valley as a promised land. But how does the image engage with the social structures of its own time? Was it conservative, progressive, or critical of artistic institutions? We might interpret this as a political statement, but its public role is complex. As historians, we must use diverse research resources, such as period writings on environmentalism, art criticism, and economic data, to better understand Cole’s artistic production and the painting’s meaning as contingent on its social and institutional context.
