Curatorial notes
Emile Pierre Maria Spruyt created this certificate for the Antwerp fire department with etching in 1895. The print provides us with insight into the cultural values and social expectations prevalent at the time. On the left, we see a heroic male firefighter rescuing a child, embodying traditional gender roles and the ideal of male bravery. The scene is balanced on the right with another firefighter sounding an alarm. The print valorizes the role of the fire department, while also subtly reinforcing social hierarchies and gendered expectations. The very concept of a diploma signifies a formal acknowledgment of service and bravery, reflecting a society that values order and public service. The use of etching as a medium adds a layer of historical context, connecting it to a tradition of printmaking used for official documents and artistic expression. How does this formal recognition shape our understanding of community values and heroism?
