This black and white print by the Dero brothers captures the 1892 Landjuweel parade in Antwerp. The lower image features a ship on wheels. Note how the ship motif, a powerful symbol of passage and transformation, is being used here. The ship as a symbol carries a deep cultural weight that dates back to antiquity. Think of the Ship of Fools from the Renaissance, and the idea of society adrift. In ancient Egyptian mythology, the soul's journey to the afterlife was often depicted as a voyage across cosmic waters in a sacred boat. Similarly, the ship in the Landjuweel parade serves as a vessel, embodying the spirit of Antwerp and its connection to global trade, a symbol of a city navigating through time, bearing its cultural treasures. Such symbols are non-linear, cyclical, constantly resurfacing and evolving across history.
