Friedel Dzubas created “Over the Hill” with traditional painting materials and processes, like oils and canvas. The material qualities of the paint are front and center. Notice how the colors bleed and stain the canvas, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere. The painting was made by applying layer after layer of diluted paint, building up luminous fields of color. This technique, associated with the Color Field painters, emphasizes process and spontaneity, allowing the materials to speak for themselves. Dzubas was interested in exploring the inherent qualities of paint, pushing the boundaries of traditional painting. His method challenges traditional distinctions between painting and dyeing, blurring the lines between fine art and craft. In this way, the apparent lack of labor in the production process belies a highly considered engagement with materiality and making.
