This portrait of an unknown man was created by Coenraad Verschuur, we don't know exactly when. Just think about the act of taking a photograph at this time: the precision, the stillness required. How much light? How long to stay quiet? When I look at this photograph I'm wondering, who was this guy? I bet Verschuur was curious too, maybe that's why he took the picture. The man in the portrait looks self-assured, a bit serious, and very still. How did Verschuur create such an engaging image that makes you want to know more about the sitter? Maybe it's the contrast between the dark background and the man's light face. Maybe it's the way he's sitting, relaxed but alert. Whatever it is, Verschuur has captured something special in this portrait. It reminds us that photography, like painting, is a conversation between the artist and the subject, a way of seeing and understanding each other. Even across time, we can still feel that connection.
