This drawing of a pitcher, by Yolande Delasser, is made from colored pencil on paper. It's like Delasser is gently coaxing the form out of the page, isn’t it? Look at how she uses the colored pencil, layering and hatching to build up the form, like a sculptor adding clay. The texture feels so tactile, almost as if you could reach out and feel the grain of the wood. Those delicate strokes, how they play with light and shadow. It gives the object a certain weightiness and depth. See that dark line near the base? It grounds the pitcher, and it also pops against the lighter tones of the wood. In some ways, it reminds me of Morandi and how he used simple objects to study light and form. Art is like a conversation across time, a way of seeing and experiencing the world that keeps evolving, resisting easy answers.
