Curatorial notes

This is "Wenskaart van Ernö Tompos" by János Mata, made with an unknown medium. It's one of those images where the stark black and white really carries the load, like a woodcut or linocut maybe. You can almost feel the artist digging into the material, carving away at the surface to reveal the image. Look at the scroll in the figure's hand – the way the letters sort of burst out, all jagged and full of energy. And then there's that little flower down at the bottom, almost like a tiny afterthought, but it adds this sweet little touch of nature. I think about someone like Emil Nolde, who also had this way of making prints that feel so raw and expressive. It reminds us that art is always a conversation, a back-and-forth between artists across time. It is like they are speaking to each other through the ages, throwing ideas back and forth, always asking new questions, never quite settling on the answer.
