Curatorial notes

Thomas Danaher created this lithograph titled 'Darkness'. The scene is dominated by the monochromatic interplay of light and shadow. A fallen log, rendered with striking texture, cuts across the foreground, its stark form creating a powerful horizontal axis. The composition divides the image into distinct zones, drawing the eye across the plane. A lone tree in the background, stark against the sky, provides a vertical counterpoint to the log. This contrast destabilizes any sense of traditional perspective, inviting us to consider space not as a naturalistic rendering, but as a constructed field of visual relations. The title itself acts as a signifier, framing our reading of the image and its content. Is it a literal representation of night, or does it suggest a deeper metaphor for existential uncertainty? The structural arrangement encourages active interpretation, allowing for an evolving dialogue between the viewer and the artwork.
