Editor: This watercolor and gouache drawing, titled "A Gerfalcon on a Falconer's Glove," is from sometime between 1520 and 1562, created by Christoph Amberger. It's incredibly detailed! The bird looks so regal and intense. What strikes you about this piece? Curator: Well, looking at this from a historical perspective, we see a reflection of power and status in the Renaissance. Falconry was a sport of the aristocracy. Who gets represented, and how, is always a political act. Don’t you find it interesting that this bird is the sole focus? It is a portrait of a bird. What does this say about how nature, or even wealth acquired from nature, was being perceived and valued at the time? Editor: That’s a great point. I hadn’t considered the falcon itself as a status symbol beyond just falconry. It’s not just a bird; it represents a whole social hierarchy. Do you think that’s why the artist paid so much attention to the detail, almost like a commissioned portrait of nobility? Curator: Precisely. The level of detail underscores the bird's, and thus, the owner's value. The Staats Museum’s acquisition of such a portrait raises some important questions as well. How does the imagery affect the contemporary understanding of nature and wealth? What kind of value judgements were made to acquire this painting and showcase the falcon? Editor: That’s so interesting. It makes me see the image in a totally different light, considering its cultural context and how it circulates in a modern museum space. Thanks for that insight. Curator: My pleasure! It is imperative to understand an artwork’s journey, from the artist’s intention to its presentation today to the public. This approach enables us to have conversations around societal perspectives regarding both the subject and object depicted.
