Curatorial notes

Mary Cassatt, a privileged American expatriate, painted "Sketch of Mrs. Currey Sketch of Mr. Cassatt" as an informal oil study. Cassatt’s unique position allowed her access to intimate scenes of women's lives, at a time when the art world was dominated by male perspectives. This sketch, with its fluid brushstrokes, captures the sitter in a moment of quiet reflection. Cassatt often depicted women in domestic settings, challenging the traditional objectification of women in art. This piece, however, stands apart as the sitter is a woman of color. Her gaze and posture exude a sense of dignity, countering prevailing stereotypes. Cassatt’s work gives visibility to individuals who were often marginalized in both art and society. This portrait reflects a commitment to portraying the complexities of identity and experience. Cassatt pushes the boundaries of representation, inviting viewers to engage with themes of race, class, and gender in late 19th-century society.
