Giorgio Ghisi created this engraving of the Farnese Hercules. The monumental nude figure dominates the composition, emerging from a shallow niche that barely contains his muscular physique. The Hercules is shown in a moment of repose, yet his massive form and the intricate detailing of his muscles convey a sense of latent power. Ghisi masterfully uses line and shadow to articulate the hero’s anatomy. The texture of the skin, the lion pelt, and even the rough stone pedestal are rendered with incredible precision. The figure, however, is a reproduction of a classical sculpture from antiquity, and so the print invites us to consider relationships between originality and reproduction, and the status of the classical past in the Renaissance. Consider how the visual language of the engraving, with its stark contrasts and emphasis on form, reflects a broader cultural interest in the idealization of the human body. Notice the way this ideal form is presented in a reproduced format, which democratizes access to the form while also destabilizing its aura of uniqueness.
