This print, made by Abraham Bosse, depicts the biblical figure of Jezebel being carried off by demons. Note how Jezebel is surrounded by flames, a motif of purification or punishment, which echoes through centuries, from classical myths to medieval morality plays. Above, divine figures look down, holding symbols of judgment. The juxtaposition of heavenly figures and earthly torment embodies the eternal struggle between good and evil. Consider the demons themselves – grotesque figures that embody primal fears and societal anxieties. The image evokes deep-seated psychological responses. The terror and suffering are palpable, engaging viewers on an emotional level, reminding us of our own mortality and the potential consequences of transgression. This depiction links back to ancient ideas of underworld journeys and divine retribution, continually resurfacing across cultures.
