Curatorial notes
Niels Larsen Stevns made this drawing on paper, titled "Udkast til 'Kristus helbreder en spedalsk'", but we don't know exactly when. There’s a real sense of immediacy and process, isn't there? Look at these raw marks! This is pared back to the essential elements of the image, a notation that embraces a spontaneous quality. The stark contrast of the black lines against the page creates a rhythm, a dance between what’s there and what’s suggested. See how the artist captures the essence of figures and landscape with just a few strokes? It's like a shorthand for the story of healing. That slightly wobbly line that defines the back of the kneeling figure – it's so simple, yet it conveys so much about posture and emotion. This isn't about perfection; it’s about capturing a moment, a feeling. For me, this work really speaks to the unfinished nature of art and it's interesting to view this work next to his more finished paintings which embrace a similar approach to composition. Ultimately, this sketch leaves us with questions, and I think that's precisely where its power lies.
