This photograph from 1892 by P. Oosterhuis captures the interior of a barrack for an infantry regiment in Amersfoort. Dominating the scene is a sense of regimentation and order, symbolized by the rows of beds and neatly stacked military garments. The motif of the row, repeated in beds and storage, echoes across time. We see similar patterns in ancient Roman military camps, and even in monastic orders. It reflects a desire to impose structure, discipline, and control over communal living spaces. This rigid order contrasts with the individual human experience, a tension that has resurfaced throughout history. The motif of the collective space versus individual identity is a recurring theme that taps into our subconscious understanding of power, control, and the individual’s place within a larger system. The visual language evokes powerful emotions related to order, identity and the collective consciousness.
