Picasso made this painting, Peonies, using oil on canvas with visible brushstrokes of green, red, and yellow. You can almost imagine Picasso standing in front of the canvas, dabbing and swirling the paint to build up the textures of the flowers and the vase. There's a real sense of immediacy, like he's trying to capture the fleeting beauty of the peonies before they wilt. Look at how he uses these thick daubs of white and yellow paint to create the petals, giving them a tactile, almost three-dimensional quality. I wonder if he was thinking about Matisse when he painted this? There's something about the bold color and simplified forms that feels like a nod to his fellow painter. It is fascinating how artists are in an ongoing conversation, exchanging ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Ultimately, painting offers a form of expression that embraces ambiguity, inviting multiple interpretations.
