Editor: Here we have Sir Joshua Reynolds’ "Mrs. Fox," an oil on canvas portrait. I'm struck by the material opulence, especially the rendering of her dress. What can you tell me about this painting? Curator: Reynolds’ process reveals much about the social context. The layering of paint, the expensive pigments - they all speak to the labor and resources involved in producing such a portrait. How do these materials elevate the sitter's status? Editor: It's interesting how the materiality itself becomes a status symbol. I hadn't thought about the connection between the materials, the labor, and Mrs. Fox’s social standing. Thanks! Curator: Considering the consumption aspect also offers a different perspective on the period.
