Fernand Khnopff painted this portrait of Jonkvrouwe Maria Francisca Louisa Dommer van Poldersveldt in oil on canvas. Khnopff was a Belgian symbolist painter at the turn of the 20th century, a time when there was both a fascination with and a repression of female sexuality. Here, Maria is depicted as a young woman of the aristocracy. She's captured in a domestic setting with a piano, alluding to her refined upbringing and social status. Her gaze is direct, yet there is a sense of reserve, embodying the era’s complex attitudes toward women who were expected to be accomplished yet demure. Khnopff’s portraits often explore the inner lives of his sitters, hinting at their emotional states through subtle gestures and expressions. There's a tension between the surface representation of wealth and respectability, and the underlying themes of isolation, perhaps reflecting broader societal constraints placed on women of her class. The painting doesn’t just show a woman; it reveals a moment in the cultural history of gender and identity.

The Belgian painter Fernand Khnopff portrayed his aunt here. Seated in a slightly twisted pose, she looks dreamily away, her right hand gently touching the piano keys. Khnopff applied several layers of varnish to heighten the lustrous sheen of her skin. The piano is no longer being played: the woman is immersed in her thoughts. The artist found inspiration in dreams, music, and poetry.
