This unfinished self-portrait was made with a sanguine pencil on paper by Cor van Teeseling. I love the tentativeness of the lines, and the artist's gentle approach to defining form. The drawing is all about process; it's so raw and exposed. You can see the initial marks where van Teeseling started to map out his features, and the layers of hatching he used to build up the tones. The way he’s captured the soft fall of light on his face with such delicate lines is really beautiful. It feels like he’s inviting us into his studio, into his mind, to witness the act of creation. The unfinished quality of the piece reminds me of some of Giacometti's drawings, which also have this feeling of searching and becoming. Ultimately, it's a reminder that art is not just about the end result, but about the journey, the exploration, and the endless possibilities of what might be.
