Nicolas Perelle created this landscape with trees and travelers along a river, using etching, during the seventeenth century. The artwork invites reflection on the relationship between nature, travel and society. The travelers, dwarfed by the landscape, prompt us to consider the intricacies of class and movement. The figures in the foreground, seemingly of higher status, are accompanied by a dog, while others further away are on horseback. Do these depictions challenge or reinforce the prevailing social hierarchies? The landscape evokes a sense of both serenity and the unknown, as the travelers journey through it. The lack of specific dating may further encourage viewers to consider the painting’s relevance beyond its time of creation. What might this artwork say about our own journeys, and our place within a larger social and environmental landscape?
