Jakob Danielsen made this watercolour on paper, of unknown date, but now at the SMK. The muted tones create a quiet stillness and focus on the human drama unfolding in the small boat. Look at the way he suggests the vastness of the Arctic landscape with the soft washes of color; the cool blues and greys of the water, juxtaposed against the warmth of the sky. The texture is created through delicate, layered strokes. Notice the small figures huddled together, rendered with just a few strokes each, yet conveying a sense of collective urgency. The strokes evoke the choppy water and the distant iceberg. I’m put in mind of the Norwegian artist, Edvard Munch. Both artists harness an emotional intensity through colour and form. In both artists, the image is pregnant with psychological depths that linger long after you've looked away.
