Jules-Ernest Livernois created this photomontage of three monuments near Québec. The three monuments are visually distinct. Notice how each is framed with a unique decorative border, yet their arrangement is clearly intentional. One column is positioned to the left, another to the right, creating a symmetry which then contains the mountain between them, acting as a symbolic keystone. The grayscale palette enhances the photo's focus on form. Look closely at how the texture of the monuments contrasts with the softer rendering of the mountain. These choices affect not only what we see, but how we interpret the relationship between the monuments and their surrounding landscape. Through this arrangement, Livernois seems to suggest the monuments are extensions of the natural world, their verticality echoing the mountain's own rise. The artwork, in effect, plays with our understanding of what is natural and what is constructed, challenging us to reconsider their boundaries.
