Curatorial notes

Ľudovít Čordák captured “The courtyard of the Renaissance manor house in Strážky” using what looks like thin layers of oil paint. The whole thing is kind of muted, a very narrow range. The colors feel like a memory, not too vivid. It's got this great sense of light, not too bright, almost like a stage set. The light seems to gently wrap around the architecture and the well. Check out the way the artist handled the lawn. It's painted with a loose, almost casual touch, but it totally works, you know? It creates this feeling of a lived-in space. And that light post, oh man, it kind of leans in and looks like a giant exclamation mark in the composition! Čordák's work feels connected to artists like Vilhelm Hammershøi. Both of them seemed to be obsessed with capturing a sense of quietude and space. And isn't that what art is all about, trying to grab hold of something that slips through our fingers?
