T.L. Thompson created this print, "Op het wapen van zyne K. M. Willem den Eersten" in the Netherlands. The coat of arms is dominated by heraldic figures: lions wearing crowns, supporting a shield. The banner at the base declares "Je Maintiendrai" or "I will maintain". But this work isn't just heraldry, is it? The artist employs caricature to undermine established meanings, using the familiar symbolism of the Dutch monarchy to destabilize its authority. Look at the lions: their faces are almost human, their expressions absurd. The shield is covered in blocky shapes. The lines are coarse, the colors drab. Nothing is ennobling in this royal depiction. It raises questions about representation and power. What does it mean to deface a national symbol? The print challenges fixed meanings and invites the viewer to question what is being represented. Art is not static; it's a place for debate and re-evaluation.
