Rosalyn Drexler made this striking painting, "Is It True What They Say About Dixie," with what looks like acrylic paint and a real nose for drama. There's something both flat and sculptural about these figures. See how Drexler builds up her forms with layers of opaque paint, creating a strong contrast between the black suits and the stark white background. It’s almost collage-like, yet completely painted. The guy with the red tie feels like the key to it all, doesn't he? He is set against this chorus line of dark suits. It's a focal point that draws you in, and it makes you think about the power dynamics at play. Drexler is really good at making the ordinary seem menacing. I am reminded of the work of Peter Saul. Both artists have the ability to take the mundane and turn it into something grotesque and strangely compelling. The power of art lies in its embrace of ambiguity, inviting diverse interpretations rather than providing fixed meanings.
