Curator: Editor: This print, titled "Interior of the Hall of the Auditorium of the University of Ghent," made sometime between 1822 and 1870 by Henri Borremans, shows an incredible architectural space. The perspective is quite interesting, making it seem almost dreamlike. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Well, the immediate impact is, of course, the sheer scale! Isn't it breathtaking? This is neoclassicism at its finest – a real stage for intellectual discourse. I get a sense of measured calm, wouldn’t you say? Look at the way the figures are positioned, almost like actors waiting for their cues. This building speaks of order, reason, and maybe a little bit of grandstanding! I’m wondering: does that checkered floor remind you of anything in particular? Editor: It’s the way the lines all draw towards the center. Do you think that was intentional, to give such depth to the piece? Curator: I would be very surprised if that was not very deliberately calculated! Every line in the piece serves to guide the eye, enhance the feeling of receding into infinite space. Consider how much planning would need to go into creating a print of this complexity, how many steps... the mind boggles. The engraver’s work has a scientific rigor to it, even. But that doesn't eliminate all opportunities for creativity... the tones and the textures are so masterfully produced, wouldn't you say? Editor: Definitely. It feels like seeing a moment captured, even though it's so precisely constructed. Thank you! Curator: The pleasure was all mine. A marvelous building, and a truly beautiful print!
