Rita Angus made this watercolor painting, Arrowtown, layering washes of warm, earthy yellows and oranges with cool blues and greens. I'm imagining Rita standing there, brush in hand, letting the colors flow and blend, feeling the landscape come alive on the page. Look at the way she's outlined that central mountain with a bold, blue line. It's not about capturing every detail, but more about capturing the essence, the feeling of the place. I can almost feel the sun beating down, the dry air, the vastness of the open space. And those small details, those little dashes of green and brown, they bring it all to life. I see connections to other painters like, say, Marsden Hartley or Georgia O'Keeffe, who were also wrestling with how to depict a sense of place. Artists are always in conversation, borrowing and building on each other's ideas. Ultimately, painting isn't about getting it "right," it's about exploring, questioning, and embracing ambiguity.
