This poster was made to advertise printmaking classes at Atelier 63 in Paris. I love to imagine the anonymous artist creating this advert for a printmaking workshop! You can almost smell the ink, and hear the squeak of the press as the print is being made. I can only imagine the patience and precision required. The artist probably felt a quiet focus, a careful balance between control and letting the materials speak for themselves. It reminds me of that feeling when you’re in the zone, totally absorbed in the process, not knowing exactly how it will turn out, but trusting your intuition. The image shows us a figure in the act of printing, positioning a sheet of paper on the press. The image is predominantly monochrome, heightening the contrast and the focus on the materiality of the printing process. Making art is a constant conversation with all the artists who came before us and those who are yet to come, each of us building on the foundations laid by others.
