This study of heads by Peter Paul Rubens is rendered using ink on paper. It depicts both human and equine faces in profile. In the Renaissance, the horse was associated with nobility, power, and triumph, reflecting classical ideals. The head in profile, reminiscent of ancient Roman portraiture, evokes authority and intellect. Consider how the horse motif gallops through time, appearing not only in triumphal processions of Roman emperors, but also in later equestrian portraits of Renaissance rulers, each reiteration charging the symbol with layered meanings.
