Leo Gestel created this drawing of a nude woman and horse in the sea with pen in ink. The artist draws upon a classical motif of a nude female figure, and an equine companion, set against the sea and the sun. The scene evokes the ancient myth of Europa and the Bull. Europa was abducted by Zeus in the form of a white bull, who carried her across the sea to Crete. Here, the horse replaces the bull, but the underlying theme of transformation remains. In Gestel's rendering, the female figure seems relaxed. Unlike the myth of Europa, there isn't an indication of violence, but rather pleasure. In ancient symbolism, horses are often symbols of power, virility, and freedom. Gestel's portrayal of a nude woman with the equine symbol conveys a powerful image of unrestrained female freedom. These enduring motifs echo through the ages. They resurface and evolve, revealing layers of cultural memory.
