J. Thaysens created this lithograph portrait of an unknown man. The sitter’s dark coat and formal bearing speak to a position of authority in a historical period of emerging European nationalism. While the identity of the man is unknown, the lithograph provides a glimpse into the representation of masculinity in the 19th century. His gaze, directed slightly off to the side, suggests a thoughtful, perhaps even visionary leader. The high contrast of the lithographic technique brings a starkness to his features. His expression seems to be asking us to consider what qualities and virtues were embodied in the men who shaped societal norms and power structures. This portrait invites reflection on how representation shapes our understanding of history and the individuals who lived it. It prompts us to consider the narratives that are told, and perhaps more importantly, those that remain untold.
