Curatorial notes

Landschap met figuren en op de voorgrond een kale wilg, or Landscape with figures and a bare willow in the foreground, was drawn by Guercino in pen and brown ink. Guercino, working in 17th-century Italy, lived in a society where class distinctions dictated much of daily life. This drawing presents a wide vista populated by figures who are dwarfed by the vast landscape and a stark, barren tree. What do you make of the contrast between the vulnerability of the human figures and the resilience of nature? Guercino’s landscape can be interpreted as a reflection on the nature of existence itself. The diminutive figures set against the grandeur of nature suggest the transient and fragile nature of human life compared to the enduring landscape. It’s as if Guercino is inviting us to contemplate our place within the immensity of the world, to consider our significance but also our limitations. Does this resonate with your own sense of self?
