About this artwork
Luis Camnitzer made this photograph, The Discovery of Geometry, using his camera as a tool for playful investigation. The image is composed in grayscale, focusing on texture and form. It seems Camnitzer isn't trying to capture a scene as much as he is interested in making something happen. Look at the soft, almost fleshy form of the cotton ball held up against the sky. The hand is grasping the cotton, almost like it’s plucking it from the sky. A gesture of creation, but also capture? The softness of the cotton against the background of clouds makes the viewer wonder how solid the clouds really are. This blurring of reality, the holding of the intangible, creates a sort of visual poem. Like other conceptual artists from the late 60’s and early 70’s, such as Mel Bochner or Sol LeWitt, Camnitzer is interested in the relationship between art and language and this piece offers a meditation on our perception of space, form, and reality.
