This textile design, now at the Met, features stylized flowers and garland patterns on a small piece of paper. Although we don't know who made it, we can still appreciate the artistry involved. Look closely, and you'll notice the stippled background, created by applying tiny dots. This technique can be time-consuming, demanding patience and skill from the artisan. The intertwining garlands add another layer of complexity, framing the flowers in a delicate, rhythmic pattern. But what really catches the eye are the stylized flowers, each adorned with pearl-like accents. The design probably served as a concept for mass production. The division of labor, in which some people design and others make, is a hallmark of industrial capitalism, and this little study is an early example. The artist has given us a glimpse into the labor and skill that went into textile design, inviting us to reflect on the broader social and economic forces at play.
